From an artist who uses all three

Logic Pro X vs FL Studio vs Ableton

I've made 300+ songs across all three DAWs. Here's the honest truth about which one you should choose — and why it matters less than you think.

The Real Answer

Every DAW can make hits. Billie Eilish uses Logic. Metro Boomin uses FL Studio. Skrillex uses Ableton. The DAW doesn't make the music — you do.

That said, some DAWs fit certain workflows better. Here's my breakdown after 11 years of production.

The Big Three

Logic Pro X

$199 (one-time)

Mac only

Best for: Complete production, mixing, Apple users

How I use it:

Primary DAW for 90% of my tracks

"My go-to. Best value in music production."

One-time purchase (no subscription)
Incredible stock plugins
Best piano roll for MIDI editing
Seamless Apple ecosystem integration
Regular free updates
Drummer track is insane
Mac only (deal breaker for some)
Steeper learning curve than FL
Less popular for beat-making culture

FL Studio

$99-$499 (lifetime updates)

Windows & Mac

Best for: Beat-making, hip hop, beginners

How I use it:

Quick beat sketches, experimentation

"Best for beat-makers. Lifetime updates are clutch."

Lifetime free updates
Most intuitive for beginners
Huge producer community (tutorials everywhere)
Pattern-based workflow is addictive
Cross-platform (Windows & Mac)
Best step sequencer
Stock plugins are weaker
Audio recording workflow is awkward
Mixing can feel clunky

Ableton Live

$99-$749

Windows & Mac

Best for: EDM, live performance, sampling

How I use it:

Electronic tracks, Aries SZN production

"Best for electronic music and live sets."

Session view is revolutionary
Best for live performance
Warping and sampling is unmatched
Great for electronic/EDM
Massive sound design capabilities
Push controller integration
Most expensive option
Subscription for some features
Overkill for simple beat-making

My Recommendation

If you're on Mac and serious about music:

Logic Pro X. $199 one-time for what rivals $500+ software. The stock plugins alone are worth it. This is what I use 90% of the time.

If you're a beat-maker or on Windows:

FL Studio. The pattern workflow is intuitive, the community is huge, and lifetime updates mean you buy it once. Most hip hop producers start here.

If you're doing electronic/EDM or live performance:

Ableton Live. Session view is unmatched for electronic music. If you ever want to perform live, this is the standard.

The Truth Nobody Tells You

I made Aries SZN on a laptop with Apple earbuds. The album has streamed in 100+ countries.

It's not about the tools. It's about showing up every day and making music.

Pick a DAW. Any DAW. Learn it deeply. Make 100 songs. Then worry about switching.
